Rising Toronto-via-Guelph bedroom popster Emma Worley has announced plans for her debut album Sentimentalist, out June 9 via Victory Pool.
The effort finds the OCAD grad "pulling from lived experience, triumph, heartbreak and everything in between," and teaming up with Miles Breithaupt, Georgia Harmer collaborator Jasper Smith, Julia Jacklin/the Weather Station bassist Ben Whiteley and string composer Drew Jurecka, among others.
The artist previews the 10-track effort today with lead single "Gemini." Taking the focal point of the accompanying video are the handmade costumes designed by Worley and fabricated by Tierre Taylor, Akash Inbakumar, Hatley Walker, Marianne Ibrahim, denirée isabel and Mary Schnurr. The pieces are worn by a team of dancers from Canadian Contemporary Dance Theatre, who bring director Nora Rosenthal's 16mm-shot video to life in haunting landscapes.
Said Worley of the track:
"Gemini" was written in the wake of a big fight about nothing. Actually, it was written in the wake of a big fight about adopting a cat. It is about being reactive and then filled with gut-wrenching remorse. Passion is double-edged and channelling it positively is something I've worked really hard at. In a way, I wrote this song asking for patience and forgiveness from someone I love and hurt. It's about an emotional swell; love and tension swirling around something you can't help but damage, no matter how you cherish it.
