Grimes is the latest artist to enter the world of blockchain technology, sharing unreleased music as part of an exclusive collection of crypto artwork.
Yesterday (February 28), the Canadian launched the first volume of her WarNymph Collection with 10 digital art pieces — in the form of non-fungible tokens (NFT) — that were created alongside brother and collaborator Mac Boucher.
An NFT is a unique cryptocurrency token that can be used to verify authenticity and ownership within a blockchain network.
Select pieces of the WarNymph Collection, arriving through NFT marketplace Nifty Gateway, come accompanied by exclusive audio. The NFT titled "Earth" features the unreleased "Ærythe," while "Mars" is soundtracked by "Mars Theme."
Meanwhile, "Death of the Old" — the lone remaining piece as of press time — features a demo of "Anhedonia." The piece presently has a bid price of $211,111 USD. A percentage of proceeds from sales of the series will go to environmental NGO Carbon 180.
An abstract for the collection reads, "Grimes, with the WarNymph project, explores the fluidity of identity in the virtual age: the ability to create, augment, and splinter ourselves into unlimited avatars, create boundless worlds, and build rich, complex lore."
