Apparently Grimes doesn't just want to be software, she also wants to be Taylor Swift — and, really, who can blame her? After endorsing #Swift4President on X (formerly Twitter) last week, Grimes is now accrediting her track "California" to "cosplay" of her as well.
In a conversation with K-Pop girl group Aespa for Rolling Stone, Grimes explained the song's origins when Aespa's Giselle asked how she came up with the "vibe" of "Easily" and "California."
"I think I was just doing Taylor Swift cosplay," she responded. "But it's also vaguely about how the media is obsessed with portraying you as this troubled soul or something."
With both tracks coming out in 2015 as part of Art Angels (which got a rare Exclaim! 10/10), "California" remains one of Grimes's most popular songs to this day, while she describes "Easily" as one of the most hated by her fans.
Although the Swift comparison is hard to pick out amongst the distorted vocals and electro synths on "California," her reference to the media is certainly apparent in the lyricism: "I don't wanna know what they say / Cause I get carried away / Commodifying all the pain / Bad things they see in me, I cannot see myself / When you get bored of me, I'll be back on the shelf."
