It's safe to say the Grammys have pissed off a few different people this year. While the Beyhive — and most other music fans, really — are reeling over Harry Styles winning album of the year over RENAISSANCE, Grimes has revealed her experience as a board member, calling the awards show "irrelevant" after its committee failed to nominate Charli XCX.
Taking to her Instagram account yesterday (February 5) Charli XCX expressed disappointment that her album CRASH received zero nominations: "me not being nominated for crash is like mia goth not being nominated for an oscar for pearl and only further proves that people don't wanna see hot evil girls thrive," she wrote.
Grimes took the opportunity to comfort her in the comment section, detailing her experience on the "Producer of the Year" board — where she was allegedly told she couldn't nominate the late SOPHIE, a close friend of Charli's:
The Grammies [sic] are so irrelevant I wouldn't even sweat it. I stopped even clocking them in any capacity when I was on the producer of the year board and they quite literally would not allow me to nominate anyone who wasn't on a pre-fabricated list that was exceptionally boring. I was one of 3 women and the only person under 40 for sure. It's literally not a relevant thing. I tried to nominate Sophie and was told that wasn't allowed.
While Grimes is known for making questionable statements, points were made here! SOPHIE helped spearhead the hyperpop genre, and deserved to get her flowers before her passing. Perhaps this supposed experience is part of why Grimes considers music her "sidequest" now.
