Gregory Pepper and His Problems Detail 'Black Metal Demo Tape,' Premiere New Single

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Jan 25, 2017

After shredding up the stage with a particularly memorable set at his hometown's Hillside Festival this past summer, Gregory Pepper and His Problems' namesake musician retreated to the studio to create some darker fare than we're used to from the Guelph musician.

Following up Chorus! Chorus! Chorus! and Ghost, Pepper's ready to release Black Metal Demo Tape on February 24 via Fake Four Inc.

The offering is, in fact, not a collection of black metal nor a demo tape, but rather a set of "punishingly heavy pop" songs that unabashedly embrace the darker, morbid themes touched upon in Pepper's previous work — encompassing everything from "despair, alienation, a maybe too healthy love of slasher flicks."

All recording and performance duties were tackled by Pepper, resulting in dirge-like rhythms, distorted guitars that "roil and churn" and minimalist production that lets listeners experience the feeling of a "third generational murkiness of a passed-around tape."

Below, you can check out the tracklisting for Black Metal Demo Tape, and get your first listen to the album via the sludgy, surreal "My Roommate Is a Snake and the Landlord's a Bat."
