Toronto’s Fucked Up played the second of a series of three shows in their hometown on Halloween night. The early show meant there were four opening acts that were unfortunately reduced to playing 20-minute sets.

Jack of Hearts and their blend of folk, country and punk opened along with fellow tour-mates and French-speaking comrades, Demon’s Claws.

Toronto’s Quest for Fire were one of the more anticipated performances, thanks to the fact that they’re made up of members from local favourites like Cursed, the Deadly Snakes, and No No Zero. Mix them all together and you get a band that border on more of a progressive rock feel. Sex Vid were the perfect opener for Fucked Up, with their delivery of raw punk accentuated by their use of distorted bass.

Fucked Up went on stage promply at midnight with an extended set-up period in which time I saw a zombie, Nacho Libre, and Orly Owl all in the same room. The five-piece delivered a fierce performance that at times, made it impossible to see the stage amidst flying beer and a colourful array of costume-clad people clambering to get closer to the stage.

Vocalist Pink Eyes (aka "Father” Damian Abraham), was dressed as a priest but the effect was short lived as he began to strip down to his underwear by the second song, crowd favourite, "David Comes to Life” from 2006’s Hidden World. What’s a Halloween show without a costume contest, you say? Yeah they did that too, and then followed it up with the wildly celebrated "Twice Born.”

And just in case that was not enough, an aftershow took place across the street featuring Vivian Girls (openers the previous night), City Limits and Teenanger.
