Exclaim!'s Staff Picks: La Sécurité's Wiggling "Serpent" Is Reborn with Every Listen

BY Megan LaPierrePublished May 10, 2023

La Sécurité scratch a particular itch for disparate elements brought together in a Boiler Room Set-level moment of transcendence. Something of a supergroup, the art-punk collective features Laurence-Anne and members of Choses Sauvages and Jesuslesfilles — and they come together with an undeniable off-kilter synergy.

"Serpent," the Ouroboros of a latest preview of their debut album Stay Safe!, is the perfect example of what makes La Sécurité as much of a treat to loop in your bedroom as they are to experience live: a mutating disco organism that continues to knock you off your feet each time it sheds its skin. From abruptly opening with a drumroll to phasing itself out with a gang vocal chant (en Français, bien sûr) about gossip, the steady pulse, shakers and Félix Bélisle's squiggly bassline all become flanges that unexpectedly connect serrated-edged guitar melodies and warbled synths. It devours expectation with each listen through, then is reborn.
