Months after taking home a Canadian Folk Music Award for her Ballad of the Runaway Girl album, Elisapie has returned with a new song. You can hear "Asuguuq" in the player below.
"Asuguuq" arrives ahead of National Indigenous Peoples Day (June 21) and is a cover of a song from Inuk country-folk artist Charlie Adams, who passed away in 2008.
Elisapie recorded her version during sessions for The Ballad of the Runaway Girl, featuring collaborator Joe Grass who lends a guitar solo to the song towards its end. As she recalled in a statement, "You could feel the soul of Charlie Adams flowing around."
The Ballad of the Runaway Girl earned Elisapie the Pushing the Boundaries Award at the 2020 Canadian Folk Music Awards in April.
Canada's National Music Centre recently announced plans to spotlight Indigenous musicians from across the country with a new online exhibit.
