Having recently opened an exhibit for Geddy Lee's bass guitar collection, Calgary's National Music Centre has now announced plans to open a permanent exhibit dedicated to Indigenous artists who have left their mark on Canadian culture.
The Canadian Press reports that the NMC will open an exhibit titled dubbed "Speak Up!" in June that will showcase Indigenous musicians from across Canada who have made "social and political impacts" on the country.
The exhibit — which will feature audio clips, artifacts and videos — will first feature 10 total artists upon opening. Names set to be featured include Tanya Tagaq, Jeremy Dutcher, Iskwé, Willie Dunn, Northern Cree and War Party.
A spokesperson for the NMC told the Canadian Press that organizers worked with Indigenous programming consultant David McLeod to select the initial group of artists. The spokesperson added that McLeod consulted with members of Canada's Indigenous communities for input.
News of "Speak Up!" arrives ahead of Indigenous Music Week at the NMC, which runs from June 19 to 22.
