Following last year's Bells of Hope, the Canadian singer-songwriter revived his Cassettes Records imprint before 2022 came to a close, treating the seven full-lengths to a limited edition CD release that has since sold out.
All seven albums — Ghosts of the 401, Fireworks & Roses, Liar's Paradise, Trout River Conspiracy, March 22, 2022, In the Valley of the Shadow of Death and Death & Taxes — were recorded in 2020 and 2021 in collaboration with Danny Miles (July Talk).
Additional playing across the collection of LPs comes from Greg Millson (Great Lake Swimmers), Connor Ellinger, Cayley Thomas, Tavo Diez de Bonilla, Connor Newton and Kaelin Murphy.
McGrath and his players draw on a varied set of influences for each release. For instance, Ghosts of the 401 — written after and inspired by the death of drummer Adam Balsam — draws from electronic and folk to capture fans of "Einstürzende Neubauten and John Fahey, Hiroshi Yoshimura and Blue Rodeo" alike, while the brass and bleeps of Death & Taxes were "brought to life by a deep obsession with Sun Ra, Hawkwind, Richard Buckner, and Getatchew Mekurya's work with the Ex."
