Dwayne Gretzky Dwayne Gretzky
Published Sep 06, 2019Rarely do you hear "cover band" and "national treasure" in the same sentence, but when referring to Dwayne Gretzky, the association just makes sense. This band have become the life of the party at every live show they play, and up until now, the essence of what makes them so great has only been captured on stage.
With their debut, self-titled album, Dwayne Gretzky don't attempt to inject the energy of their live covers into studio recordings. While the idea of being able to dance around your home listening to unique covers of high-energy songs like ABBA's "S.O.S." is tempting, a bit of the magic disappears when you remove the audience belting out every lyric along with the band.
Though it does leave the listener wanting more, removing the music from the experience of a live show doesn't discredit Dwayne Gretzky's ability to perform a damn good cover. One of the album's gems is a stripped-down version of the Cars' "Just What I Needed." The band have taken the song for a complete 180 and made it completely their own.
Dwayne Gretzky are talented musicians who truly shine when they are able to inject their creative flare into the music. The album isn't a take-home version of their live shows. It stands as an individual, mature piece of music that shows the band in a brand new light. (Independent)
