Drop The Lime / Various

FabricLive 53

As a Fabric mix, it's expected that a DJ such as Luca Venezia (aka Drop the Lime) would consider the avid South London clubber audience as they bounced in front of his decks during recording and tone down the abrasive angle of his early '00s output for Kid606's infamous Tigerbeat6 label. However, what makes FabricLive 53 something special, beyond many other instalments in this renowned series, is that Luca doesn't simply pander to the basic dance needs of that crowd. Sure, there are dub-infused, bass-heavy bangers in full force, with the bumping TRG remix of Baobinga's "State Of Ghetto Jackin'" and the worldly, whistling French Fries remix of Berou and Canblaster's "Terence Hill" being completely infectious. These contemporary numbers are placed alongside selections presenting a wide range of Drop the Lime's influences, from Maurice's influential late '80s house track, "This Is Acid," to canonized rock'n'roll classics. The mix between "(We're Gonna) Rock Around the Clock" by Bill Haley and his Comets and "I Want Candy" by the Strangeloves is particularly inspired. Most importantly, Drop the Lime maintains a smooth, yet surprising, flow throughout the mix, making FabricLive 53 an education on many levels.
