Dr. Dre Loses Trademark Suit to Gynecologist Dr. Drai
Published May 08, 2018There's a chance you might get Dr. Dre's The Chronic confused with Dr. Drai's analysis of chronic vulva pain, which is precisely why the hip-hop mogul attempted to sue the OBGYN for trademark infringement. Ultimately, however, Dr. Dre was shot down in court.
Billing himself as "America's gynecologist," Dr. Drai (whose real name is Draion M. Burch) first tried to trademark his name in 2015. It was then that Dr. Dre stepped in and tried to claim copyright infringement.
Now, however, the U.S. trademark office has disagreed. According to the BBC, a court ruled that Dr. Dre failed to show that people would get confused and buy Dr. Drai's products. After all, what Dre fan would get tricked into buying a book called 20 Things You May Not Know About the Penis?
Dr. Drai successfully argued there would be no confusion between the two, "because Dr. Dre is not a medical doctor nor is he qualified to provide any type of medical services or sell products specifically in the medical or healthcare industry."
Drai added that confusion between the two figures would be "a bad reflection on me as a doctor," citing Dre's misogynistic and homophobic lyrics as a problem.
