Destination: Oblivion

Winter Solstice is the latest remix album from Destination:Oblivion, revisiting nine tracks from last year’s December Sun. Abandoning the thematic unity of the original material without indulging in any drastic tonal shifts, the remixes explore a more disjointed audioscape. From a melancholy piano opening, Winter Solstice moves through raw abrasion and heavy groove, electronic blips and percussive guitars, techno samples and pulsing dance beats. The re-envisioned tracks are rarely improvements as much as excavations, uncovering and sometimes expanding the potential of the originals. Yet Winter Solstice has its own gems, and the record closes as seductively as it begins, tapping into Destination:Oblivion’s emotional range and aggressive strengths.
