David Celia

'Double Mind' (album stream)

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Jun 2, 2015

Toronto-based folk-rock music man David Celia is set to unveil his latest LP Double Mind today (June 2), and to mark the occasion, Exclaim! is streaming the brand new record in its entirety.

The set of songs formed while Celia was on the road across Europe and North America — a hectic lifestyle explored on the previously shared single "The Grind." Upon returning home, he self-financed and produced the album before it was mixed by Andy Magoffin (Great Lake Swimmers) at House of Miracles in Cambridge, ON.

The themes on Double Mind stretch from "lost and new-found love to the rigors of being a working, independent artist and all points in between." Throughout the songs, confidence, humour and wit blend together with more introspective moments of insecurity.

The range of motifs and emotions are seamlessly packaged together on the record thanks to Celia's unique brand of roots-tinged pop music.

"Welcome to the Show" draws the listener in with its easygoing twang, which rears its head again on the slowed-down, harmonica-driven "Speak to Me," while tracks like "Double Mind" and "Tongues" stick to a more classic rock'n'roll vibe. "Thin Disguise" has an almost jazzy lilt to it, and "I Want You to Be Happy" is a bluesy, sad-sounding ballad. He runs the gamut of genres, but no song feels out of place.

Hear the new collection of tunes by giving Double Mind a spin in the player below. It's officially out today, and you can catch Celia live at his upcoming album release show on June 4 at the Great Hall in Toronto.
