Dan Deacon Returns with New Album 'Mystic Familiar'

He'll hit Vancouver and Toronto on tour next year

While Dan Deacon has kept busy since sharing 2015's Gliss Riffer, the experimental-leaning artist has now returned with details of a solo follow-up effort.

Titled Mystic Familiar, Deacon's latest will arrive January 31 through Domino.

Eleven tracks in length, the "voice-focused" album is said to be Deacon's first where each song revolves around the central concept of the "Mystic Familiar." The album's titular concept references "a supernatural other being that we carry with us everywhere in our head, which only we can hear and with whom we live our lives in eternal conversation."

Alongside the announcement, Deacon has shared "Sat by a Tree," which arrives via a video directed by Daren Rabinovitch. Starring comedian Aparna Nancherla, the clip is a very vivid reflection on the shortness of life and the passing of time.

You can watch the video for "Sat by a Tree" and feature with Deacon below — and be warned if bugs make you squeamish.

Deacon has also mapped out a lengthy run of tour dates behind Mystic Familiar. Next year, he'll hit Vancouver's Venue on March 21 before playing Lee's Palace in Toronto on April 24.

In the time since Gliss Riffer, Deacon has scored both a cycling documentary and a film about rats, collaborated with New York City Ballet choreographer Justin Peck, provided music for ESPN's 30 for 30 short Subject to Review and more.
