As lead-off sets go, former Hamilton resident Kae Sun left an impressive mark in his opening night time slot, burning through a rootsy suite of tortured soul peppered with impassioned, rapid-fire raps and righteous reggae turns. Switching off between a fisted mic and his acoustic guitar, the observational urban poet did his best to maintain his knowing soulman pose in front of the sparse crowd, ensuring his diverse freedom songs held a proper degree of necessary emotion. But with the combined, gritty delivery of both the solid backing band and the singer's own gritty voice, Kae proved a welcome entrée, and someone folks may want to keep an eye on in the near future.
