Caleb Scofield — bassist for both Cave In and Old Man Gloom — has been killed in a tragic car crash. The fiery fatal accident took place on Wednesday (March 28) in New Hampshire, where Scofield hit a toll booth. He was 39.
As NECN reports, Scofield died of smoke and heat inhalation, thermal injuries and multiple blunt impact injuries. The crash happened on Wednesday on the Everett Turnpike at the Bedford toll plaza, with the fiery wreckage being so severe that the northbound side of the highway was closed for nearly two hours.
"We don't have any reports of any odd behavior before the crash. Just that the crash happened," said state police Sgt. Bryan Trask told NECN. "It appears the subject was trying to change lanes right before they entered the toll plaza and didn't make the lane quite clear and crashed into the jersey barrier."
Scofield joined the heavy-minded Boston unit Cave In back in 1998, shortly before their debut album Until Your Heart Stops. Along with serving as the group's longtime bassist, Scofield also often provided vocals, as he remained a steady fixture in the band over the years.
Outside Cave In, Scofield also played with Old Man Gloom, the supergroup featuring Isis frontman Aaron Turner, Converge's Nate Newton and drummer Santos Montano.
In addition, Scofield fronted his own band Zozobra, a sludge metal power trio who released three album and also featured Montano. The project's most recent album was 2013's Savage Masters.
