Califone

Califone

BY James KeastPublished Apr 1, 2000

Night sweats, desperation, guilt and crises of faith, all in the space of five songs, permeate this self-titled Califone EP, a follow-up to the self-titled EP on Flydaddy a couple of years ago. Acoustic guitars, drum loops, moody keyboards and a generally sombre mood permeate these hallucinatory visions from the mind of Tim Rutili, but its the religious themes that dominate. Califone isn't going to be invited to play at the Vatican anytime soon, but being a recovering Catholic hasn't resulted in music this good since Sinead O'Connor's earliest work.
