Calexico

Descamino

BY James KeastPublished Mar 1, 2000

Calexico, a group whose vision recalls more than anything the dusty wide open spaces of the American Midwest, seems an unlikely candidate for a remix project in any form, but Descamino is not your average remix. In the longest effort here, Bundy K. Brown strips Calexico down to its most basic elements, thus highlighting each guitar line or trumpet spurt. All four contributors behind the board (including Tasha Bundy, Kassel Krew and the band's own Joey Burns) highlight the sparseness of the band's music - no one piles on the beats here. It's not going to move you on the dance floor, but it's an illuminating journey from a different starting point into the music of Calexico. Just enough to hold you over until their new full-length, due this spring.
