Now free to vocalize her thoughts as she pleases, Britney Spears has been attacked by the Iranian State Media for supporting protesters in Iran.
Spears and her husband Sam Asghari, who is Iranian-American, publicized their support of demonstrators last week, with Spears tweeting, "Me & my husband stand with the people of Iran fighting for freedom." Later, Asghari reposted a screenshot of the tweet to his Instagram with the caption: "My queen & I stand with the people of Iran. Keep fighting."
Since Spears posted her support, Iran's state-affiliated media company, the Islamic Republic News Agency, has taken to attacking her online. However, the agency's version of a drag is just bringing up her past conservatorship: "American singer [Britney Spears] was placed under her father's conservatorship in 2008 due to her mental health problems," a tweet from the organization reads. "That gave Britney's father control over her finances and even her personal life aspects such as pregnancy, remarriage and visits to her teenage sons. #MahsaAmini."
The tweet has been interpreted by some as a means to discredit Spears's opinion, as the IRNA tries to drown out the widespread support for the demonstrations taking place across Iran.
The ongoing protests were sparked by the death of 22-year-old activist Mahsa Amini, who was arrested on claims that she not wearing a required religious headscarf. After dying in police custody, her family has claimed she was beaten to death by the morality police, while the IRNA claims she had a heart attack.
