We all know how festivals go: bands get billed together because they fit, or kind of fit, or barely fit. In this case, Toronto's Biblical sharing a stage with Calgary post-metallers the Weir and jolly-metallers Torche was a bit of a mismatch. Biblical cranked out loud rock done loudly and all of that, but their set felt like Load-era Metallica featuring Deep Purple's Jon Lord on keyboards and Danzig at the vox; not the best mix, for those keeping track at home. More than a few of the diehards in the crowd were seen turning up their noses, and at least one was spotted doing a throat-slice motion, in hopes that these less-than-subtle hints would speed along Biblical's set. A rip-roarin' Motorhead/Zeke blazer about midway through was just… confusing.
The band was more impressive when they stuck to their obvious love of classic rock, with impressively moustached guitarist Andrew Scott taking a break from his axe to work the keys with much success. Still, a lot more was expected from a Toronto band that features vocalist/bassist Nick Sewell (ex-the Illuminati) and another guitarist (Matt Mclaren) sporting a C'Mon t-shirt. It also should be noted that with a band name like Biblical and a first EP entitled Monsoon Season, this was eerily suitable flood-night fare at Sled Island.
