After a brief period of uncertainty, the Beatles' rumoured second volume of BBC recordings has been confirmed. Titled On Air - Live at the BBC Volume 2, it arrives on double CD and vinyl November 7 in North America and November 11 in the UK. The release was confirmed today (September 12) on the Beatles website, as well as with a trailer video for the set featuring vintage sights and sounds. You can see the clip here on YouTube.
The collection features 63 tracks recorded for BBC programs between 1963 and 1964, including 37 previously unreleased performances and 23 tracks of "lively studio banter" from the Fab Four.
"There's a lot of energy and spirit," Paul McCartney said in a statement. "We are going for it, not holding back at all, trying to put in the best performance of our lifetimes."
In addition to live versions of "Please Please Me," "Words of Love" and "I Saw Her Standing There," the set also features previously unheard covers of Chuck Berry's "I'm Talking About You" and the Stephen Foster-penned "Beautiful Dreamer," as well as threads in a tribute to BBC pop program Saturday Club called "Happy Birthday, Dear Saturday Club."
"We'd been raised on the BBC radio programs," McCartney added. "One of the big things in our week was Saturday Club — this great show was playing the kind of music we loved, so that was something we really aspired to."
On Air - Live at the BBC Volume 2 will arrive on 180-gram vinyl, as well as CD and digitally, and the physical editions include a 48 page booklet with rare photos and an introduction from McCartney. The release follows 1994's Live at the BBC.
