Cage the Elephant Announce New Album 'Neon Pill,' Summer North American Tour

They'll bring the new material to Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Toronto with Young the Giant

Cage the Elephant have confirmed the release of their sixth full-length album — news they're sharing alongside summer North American tour dates with Young the Giant and the release of new single "Out Loud."

Neon Pill is due May 17 on RCA Records and is now available for pre-order. Following 2019's Social Cues, the John Hill-produced record materialized in sessions at Sonic Ranch in El Paso, Electric Lady in New York, Sound Emporium in Nashville, Echo Mountain in North Carolina and at Hill’s own studio in Los Angeles.

“To me, Neon Pill is the first record where we were consistently uninfluenced, and I mean that in a positive way,” frontman Matthew Shultz said in a statement. “Everything is undoubtedly expressed through having settled into finding our own voice. We’ve always drawn inspiration from artists we love, and at times we’ve even emulated some of them to a certain degree. With this album, having gone through so much, life had almost forced us into becoming more and more comfortable with ourselves. We weren’t reaching for much outside of the pure experience of self expression, and simultaneously not necessarily settling either. We just found a uniqueness in simply existing.”

Of "Out Loud," Schultz added, “Maybe it’s so straightforward and honest because I didn’t know if it would see the light of day. My dad’s the reason we discovered music in the first place. When he died, ‘Out Loud’ just poured out of me. My efforts towards the song were deeply rooted in paying honour to him, and I knew it meant a lot to [brother and guitarist] Brad [Shultz] too."

Listen to the piano ballad below, where you'll also find the band's full tour itinerary — including Canadian stops in Vancouver (June 26), Edmonton (June 28), Winnipeg (August 10) and Toronto (August 27). Tickets go on sale to the general public next Friday (March 8), with presales for select dates beginning March 5.
