A contestant on TBS's reboot of the game show Wipeout has died of a heart attack in Santa Clarita, CA, after completing the show's obstacle course.
As TMZ reports, the contestant began experiencing chest pains after running the course on Wednesday (November 18) and was later treated by on-site medical staff with a defibrillator before he was taken to hospital. The unidentified person later passed away from cardiac arrest.
"We offer our heartfelt condolences to the family and our thoughts are with them at this time," production company Endemol Shine North America said in a statement in response to the death.
TBS added: "We are devastated to have learned of his passing and our deepest sympathy goes out to the family."
The reboot — which follows the three rounds and a three-stage obstacle course "consisting of multiple strategy and decision points designed to further challenge and wear out the stamina" of participants — was picked up by TBS earlier this year, and is scheduled to air sometime in 2021. So far, no word on if production will be halted due to the incident.
John Cena, Nicole Byer and Camille Kostek are billed as the new show's hosts.
The original Wipeout series aired from 2008 to 2014 on ABC.
