The film captures the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival
Published Apr 26, 2021Over a year removed from the film's announcement, Questlove's documentary about 1969's Harlem Cultural Festival finally has a teaser trailer.
The first look at Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) aired last night (April 25) during the Academy Awards, at which Questlove was DJing.
The Harlem Cultural Festival was a concert series in the neighbourhood's Mount Morris Park that featured performances by Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, B.B. King, Sly and the Family Stone, Gladys Knight & the Pips, the 5th Dimension and more.
Summer of Soul premiered virtually at Sundance earlier this year, and captured the US Grand Jury Prize in the documentary category.
"It has always been a dream of mine to direct films and telling this story has truly been an amazing experience," the Roots drummer shared following the festival win. "I am overwhelmed and honored by the reception the film is receiving."
