While Paddington 2's battle for the best film of all time rages on, its long-anticipated follow-up is getting closer to becoming a reality today, as Paddington 3 is now confirmed to begin production in 2022.

The third chapter of the beloved film series was included among the future titles revealed by Studiocanal at an event in Cannes, as per Variety. According to Studiocanal CEO Anna Marsh, Paddington 3 is set to begin its principal photography in the second quarter of next year.

While the film's director, cast and shooting locations are still being kept under wraps, Paddington and Paddington 2's head honcho Paul King has been confirmed as an executive producer. The film is being written by Simon Farnaby and Mark Burton based on the story by King.

As previously reported, David Heyman of Studiocanal's co-producers, Heyday Films, doesn't imagine King will be interested in directing.

"I don't think Paul King will direct the third," Heyman said earlier this year. "He did the first two — he and I are working on another project together… He's very special, Paul."

He added: "He worked on the idea… he comes up with the idea with Simon Farnaby and Mark Burton, and then they develop it and come back for more, back and forth, and then it'll get written and Paul will come in and stir it up a little bit."
