No one can be told what The Matrix 4  is — you have to see it for yourself. That's certainly the case for Matrix stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, who have spoken out about their surprise that a new sequel is getting made. They've also promised that the upcoming film will have a powerful message for our times.

"Lana Wachowski wrote a beautiful script and a wonderful story that resonated with me," Reeves told Empire. "That's the only reason to do it. To work with her again is just amazing. It's been really special, and the story has, I think, some meaningful things to say, and that we can take some nourishment from."

The sequel to the original Matrix trilogy will be directed by Lana Wachowski (Lilly Wachowski has stepped back from the project). Lana penned the script alongside Aleksandar Hemon and novelist David Mitchell. Reeves and Moss will star, reprising their roles as Neo and Trinity.

"I never thought that it would happen. It was never on my radar at all," Moss said. "When it was brought to me in the way that it was brought to me, with incredible depth and all of the integrity and artistry that you could imagine, I was like, 'This is a gift.' It was just very exciting."

According to the most recent reports, The Matrix 4 is slated for release on May 21, 2021, although it remains to be seen how or if cornavirus lockdowns have pushed back that timeline.
