Adopting new measures to keep her climate change protests going amid the COVID-19 crisis, Jane Fonda has partnered with Green Peace to host a virtual "Fire Drill Friday" protest tomorrow (April 3).
Taking place at 2 p.m. ET tomorrow, Fonda and Green Peace will move their activism indoors to help stop the spread of coronavirus, while maintaining a strong front against climate change. According to Variety, the Zoom-powered protest will spotlight youth-led activism in honour of the upcoming 50th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22.
Green Peace's representatives offered the following statement about the event:
Join us this Friday alongside Jane Fonda and Fire Drill Friday to keep the pressure on politicians to adopt a Green New Deal, end new fossil fuels, and enact a just transition to a renewable economy that protects workers and communities.
There will be incredible speakers from the climate youth movement, an innovative virtual tour of the devastating impact of the fossil fuel industry, and lots of ways to plug in and take action!
Fonda first began her weekly protests last fall and initially ran "Fire Drill Fridays" for 14 weeks, getting arrested almost every time alongside a host of famous pals. Now, with a global pandemic on our hands, the actor is stepping up to lead the protest once more.
"We have to realize that the coronavirus, COVID-19, is not unrelated to the climate crisis," Fonda explained. "All of the major pandemics came from animals: AIDS, SARS, MERS, Ebola and now COVID-19."
Those who wish to join the virtual protest can RSVP here.
