Newly minted Emmy-winning Squid Game director Hwang Dong-hyuk has addressed some concerns about the forthcoming reality adaptation of his hit Netflix series, assuring reporters backstage at the awards ceremony that audiences should not take the dystopian game show adaption so seriously.
"Yes, I am aware of the reality show being created," Hwang said of Squid Game: The Challenge [via EW]. "I actually met with the creator yesterday, and they had many questions for me. What I hope is that they will be carrying on my vision and intention as much as possible for the show."
He continued: "I think that even though our show does carry quite a heavy message, and I know there are some concerns of taking that message and creating it into a reality show with a cash prize, however I feel like whenever you take things too seriously, that's really not the best way to go for the entertainment industry."
He went on to explain that reproductions of source material can "bring new meaning to the industry," and that he thinks the Squid Game reality adaption will usher in a "great new direction" for television.
Filming for the reality series is currently underway in the UK. As previously reported, Squid Game: The Challenge will see 456 players compete against each other in games inspired by the original show for a grand prize of $4.56 million.
Squid Game (the fictional series) was renewed at Netflix for Season 2 back in January. So far, no word on when the series is due to return.
