As we await the freshly, officially confirmed second season of Squid Game, the Netflix original's cultural shockwave continues to grow as a new real-life game show version of the Korean death match series has been greenlit by its streaming home.
Squid Game: The Challenge will see 456 players compete against each other in games inspired by the fictional show for a grand prize of $4.56 million. "Their strategies, alliances, and character will be put to the test while competitors are eliminated around them," reads a press release, which also promises "surprising new additions" — hopefully amounting to its IRL competitors not getting, y'know, murdered, and maybe fewer real estate spinoffs.
The game show is currently in its casting phase, as teased by a promotional video (seen below), which also warns, "The biggest risk is not playing." Sounds ominous!
"Squid Game took the world by storm with director Hwang [Dong-hyuk]'s captivating story and iconic imagery," Brandon Riegg, Netflix VP of Unscripted and Documentary Series, said of the dystopian fiction in a statement. "We're grateful for his support as we turn the fictional world into reality in this massive competition and social experiment."
