In honour of Juneteenth, HBO has announced plans to stream Damon Lindelof's Watchmen starting tomorrow (June 19) through to Sunday (June 21) for free on the platform.
Starring Regina King, the 2019 series followed some of the canonical themes in the original Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons graphic novel and Zack Snyder's subsequent 2009 film. However, it expanded on the Watchmen world's handling of race, having opened the series with the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre and placing a heavy focus on Black lives in relation to the police.
The platform will release all of Watchmen Season 1 for free "as an extension of the network's content offering highlighting Black experiences, voices and storytellers."
In a statement, the platform shared that "HBO is proud to offer all nine episodes for free of this timely, poignant series that explores the legacy of systemic racism in America."
While the series was originally meant to stand as a one-off, earlier this year, the head of programming at HBO revealed that a second season is not out of the question. That said, Watchmen Season 2 has not yet been announced.
