Carey Mulligan Has Still Never Seen 'Drive'

"I tried on an airplane, but then someone walked past and saw me watching myself"

When Drive hit in 2011, it was a bombshell that signified both Ryan Gosling and Chromatics as stars in their distinctive fields. Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, the film racked up repeat viewings from its many obsessive acolytes. Still, some seven years later, its star Carey Mulligan still hasn't seen the damn thing.

Speaking with Variety at Cannes, Mulligan revealed that she didn't watch a final cut of the film because she was busy shooting something else when press time rolled around.

"I never saw Drive finished," she admitted. "I never got to do any press for it."

Since its release, Mulligan has tried watching it once but became rather embarrassed by the process.

"I tried on an airplane, but then someone walked past and saw me watching myself," she said with a laugh.

Perhaps it's best that Mulligan never watched the film anyway. After all, she did not love her own Oscar-nominated turn in 2009's An Education. In fact, she told Variety that she thought she was "terrible" in it.

"I had never seen myself on-screen that much before," she said. "I thought I was really boring to watch. It was all really weird."
