Adding to the ever-growing list of films postponed into oblivion due to COVID-19 are now A Quiet Place Part II and Top Gun: Maverick — both of which will no longer come out in any form this year.
On Thursday night (July 23), Paramount Pictures confirmed that John Krasinski's A Quiet Place sequel will now not be released in theatres until April 23, 2021. This is a significant delay from his previously announced release date of September 6, 2020, and an even bigger delay from the film's initial release date of March 20.
Tom Cruise's new Top Gun film, meanwhile, will shift from its most recent release date of December 23, 2020, all the way to July 2, 2021.
"We truly believe that there is no movie-viewing experience like the one enjoyed in theatres," said Paramount's president of domestic distribution Chris Aronson and president of international theatrical distribution Mark Viane in a joint statement. "We are committed to the theatrical experience and our exhibition partners, and want to stress that we are confident that, when the time comes, audiences everywhere will once again enjoy the singular joy of seeing Paramount films on the big screen."
Other newly announced delays at Paramount include Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which is now set to open on April 8, 2022, while a new Jackass film shifts from July 2021 to September 3, 2021; Under the Boardwalk now lands on July 22, 2022; and The Tiger's Apprentice is going from February 11, 2022, to February 10, 2023.
Yesterday also saw Disney postponing a pile of highly anticipated films, including Niki Caro's Mulan and Wes Anderson's The French Dispatch, as well as the Avatar sequels and a trio of new Star Wars films.
Earlier this month, Christoper Nolan's Tenet was also postponed indefinitely due to COVID-19.
