Idris Elba to Play Knuckles in 'Sonic the Hedgehog 2'

The 'Suicide Squad' actor is lending his voice to the sequel

Although Sonic the Hedgehog 2 wrapped shooting in BC back in May, the newest cast member has just been announced: Idris Elba — who most recently appeared as Bloodsport in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad — will play Knuckles the red Echidna [via Deadline].

As you might expect from the character's name, Knuckles is known for being feisty; he's a fighter who never hesitates to throw a punch. This actually makes Elba a pretty perfect casting choice, since he's previously trained to become a kickboxer for a reality series.

Elba joins previously announced cast members James Marsden, Ben Schwartz, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, Shemar Moore and Jim Carrey. Jeff Fowler also returns to direct the sequel to the first film, which is based on the classic SEGA video game franchise.

Check out Elba's Instagram post confirming his role below.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is anticipated to arrive in theatres on April 8, 2022.
