The dawn of year-end list season is here: as you prepare to recover from having your feelings hurt by Spotify Wrapped, YouTube has also shared a list of 2021's most streamed music videos — and perhaps it will come as less of a personal attack.
The Weeknd claims the top spot on the Canadian list by going under the knife in the clip for "Save Your Tears." The artist born Abel Tesfaye also recently landed the No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 song of all time, so he's clearly getting work done and putting in the work.
He is followed on YouTube's ranking by Timbiebs spokesperson Justin Bieber's "Peaches" and not-the-father Lil Nas X's cultural-resetting "MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name)."
Rising star Olivia Rodrigo takes both the fourth and fifth positions — the former with her heartbroken breakout hit "drivers license" and enacting a cheerleader's revenge in the latter with "good 4 u." It was undoubtedly another huge year for K-pop, so BTS landed in seventh with "Butter," just ahead of the dynamic duo Silk Sonic's equally smooth "Leave the Door Open."
Rounding out the most-streamed in Canada are Pooh Shiesty feat. Lil Durk (which actually topped the US list), Doja Cat ft. SZA and Polo G. Additional features on the US side of things include videos by fast-food chicken mogul DJ Khaled, MO3 & OG Bobby Billions, Cardi B and Rod Wave.
Elsewhere in YouTube's 2021 stats, the most-watched video in Canada was MrBeast's documentation of spending 50 hours buried alive, which begs the question: are we all okay? Meanwhile, Kallmekris was the top Canadian creator on the platform, as well as the top breakout creator.
