In 2022, Toronto's Wine Lips re-created the magic of their infamous live show (previously seen during Exclaim!'s Class of 2019 showcase) for a concert film. Since then, the garage punks have seemingly been adding some studio sorcery to the mix: they've announced their fourth studio effort, previewed today by relentlessly crunchy lead single "Derailer."
The follow-up to 2021's Mushroom Death Sex Bummer Party, Super Mega Ultra is out on April 5 via Stomp Records. It was recorded with Simon Larochette at the Sugar Shack in London.
"It's tough writing a new record when you're always on tour," the band's Cam Hillborn admitted in a press release. "The previous album seemed to be doing really well and at times I felt like I was hitting a wall creatively. Long story short, I think this album turned out great. Simon always brings a good vibe at the Sugar Shack and we were able to try some new ideas and capture the energy without straying too far from our roots. Excited to see where these songs take us in the future."
Of the single, he added, "It might have a few different interpretations but it’s basically about the lengths people will go to to keep up an image or persona while sacrificing physical and mental health to get there. Pushing yourself to the edge until you feel like you’re going to 'derail' off the tracks. I find that social media has this effect on people where they feel the need to act and look a certain way and it’s all super fake and hilarious, it’s essentially a song mocking that lifestyle."
