Made up of former members of Sleater-Kinney, Helium and the Minders, Portland supergroup Wild Flag are rock legends in their own right. Even so, sometimes you have to tip your hat to those that came before you, as the act did at a recent Philadelphia gig courtesy of a Patti Smith cover.
Carrie Brownstein drops her axe for the number, stamping around the stage while belting out "Ask the Angels," off Smith's 1976 platter Radio Ethiopia. The rest of the band bashes the tune out with garage rawk aplomb, with guitarist Mary Timony slaying her fretboard with an uncouth solo.
Aside from being a kick-ass tune to cover, the track seems especially fitting considering its shouted chorus of "And honey, honey the call is for war / And it's wild, wild, wild, wild." And following last week's leaked tune "Glass Tambourine," Wild Flag are on a roll right now. Check out the clip below.
