White Hinterland Returns with 'Baby,' Premieres New Single

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Jan 24, 2014

It's been four years since Massachusetts musician Casey Dienel issued an LP as White Hinterland, but the electronically geared indie-pop artist has formally announced she's making her return this spring with a new long-player called Baby. Dead Oceans will be sliding Dienel's latest bundle of joy into stores April 1.

A press release for the album, White Hinterland's first since 2010's Kairos, explains that Dienel spent two and a half years prepping the set and recorded it in a studio she built in her old childhood home in Scituate, MA. The song cycle is described as less "atmospheric" than Kairos, while flirting with the songwriter's passion for R&B and gospel, among other styles. Thematically, the set is said to be "a deep and dark collection of songs that addresses the fear of breaking established rituals and setting out into the unknown."

In a statement, Dienel explained, "The themes of this record to me are personal agency, strength, growth, determination... and to get those things is usually fucking terrifying and comes with casualties and loss."

In addition to Dienel, the 10-song album also includes contributions from upcoming tourmate Sean Carey (Bon Iver, S. Carey), Neal Morgan (Joanna Newsom, Bill Callahan), and Cole Kamen-Green (Beyoncé). Down below you'll find the new lyric vid for the album's first single "Ring the Bell," a complex tapestry of digitally manipulated beats, heady keyboard oscillations, warm brass blasts and Dienel's cascading, soul-stirring vocal runs.

White Hinterland will be travelling with S. Carey on his upcoming North American tour, which includes stops in Montreal and Toronto. You'll find the show info beneath Baby's tracklisting.
