Watch Father John Misty Play New Material on 'SNL'

Father John Misty will release his album Pure Comedy on April 7, and with a tour set to kick off this spring, the wryly observational songwriter has given us a small taste of his live show by performing last night (March 4) on Saturday Night Live.

As is traditional for SNL's musical guests, Mr. Misty played two songs. First, he debuted a new song called "Total Entertainment Forever." It's more spry and sprightly than the other songs we've heard from Pure Comedy, with lots of bongo bopping, wailing horns and wordless "oh oh" melodies. That being said, the lyrics touch on familiar subject matter, with Misty commenting on the human experience and calling us "a race of demented monkeys." There's also an opening line about "bedding Taylor Swift."

Later in the program, Misty returned — having replaced his shiny suit jacket with a knee-length coat — to perform Pure Comedy's theatrical title track. This epic ballad gave the singer a chance to show off both his tender crooning and his most flamboyant dance moves.
