Wacken Metal Battle Returns to Canada in 2023

The winning unsigned heavy band plays the long-running Wacken Open Air festival in Germany

Following a three-year break, Wacken Metal Battle Canada is returning to action, giving unsigned heavy bands a shot to perform at one of the biggest heavy music festivals on the planet.

The international competition sees bands participate in local qualifying rounds, judged by local music industry representatives. One band from each city will move forward to the Canadian national final. The winner of the national final will perform at Wacken Open Air 2023 in Wacken, DE, against the winners of 29 other countries in a final global battle.

The following eight Canadian cities will host qualifying rounds: Vancouver, BC, Edmonton, AB, Calgary, AB, Toronto, ON, Hamilton, ON, Ottawa, ON, Montreal, QC, and Quebec City, QC. Canada's national final will be hosted in Toronto in May 2023, with details to be determined.

Previous winners of Wacken Metal Battle Canada include Toronto's the Slyde (2019), Toronto's Centuries of Decay (2018), Hamilton's Profaner (2016), Toronto's Vesperia (2015), Montreal's MUTANK (2014) and Toronto's Crimson Shadows (2013).

Independent Canadian bands interested in participating can find further application information via the event's official website. Submissions will close on December 19 at 11:59 p.m. PT.
