Unearth are apparently the Watchers of Rule, at least judging by the title of their upcoming LP, and we're going to have to relabel ourselves "watchers of the fretboard" after hearing the unnervingly complex series of runs and riffs embedded in the latest sneak peek from the album, "Guards of Contagion."
The track is all over the place, with menacingly detuned six-strings offering anything from chunky, palm-muted riffage and string squiggling hammer-ons, to chorus-long eruptions of two-handed tapping and the most precise pinch squeals this side of a Dimebag Darrell tutorial. All this is placed above a veritable heavy metal gumbo of mosh beats, surprisingly melodic hooks and gruff and growly vocals.
