Noises On

BY Nilan PereraPublished Jan 24, 2009

When Lou Reed released Metal Machine Music in 1975 he not only almost ended his career but created one of popular culture's first steps into art noise. It was released as a two-LP set, had the most returns of any record ever and was recalled by the company within three weeks of release date. Fast forward to 2007 and classical new music ensemble Zeitkratzer recreates this piece of feedback composition - with acoustic instruments! With this double CD/DVD release Asphodel has made a thorough and valuable document of the live concert capturing the intensity and drama of what is essentially acoustic rock noise minus the songs. The video footage is clear and well shot, the sound is great and the interview with Reed is inspired.
