WHAT IS IT?
Crust is the metallic evolution of anarcho-punk, blending the aggression of d-beat and a rumbling low end with the messages and raw aesthetics of its punk predecessors. Crust is what happens after the fall Crass so endlessly warned us about.
WHY IS IT CALLED THAT?
The term likely originated as a way of describing the unkempt look of crust fans, though it's also said that it actually comes from Hellbastard's Rippercrust demo.
WHO'S DOING IT?
Amebix (pictured) are holding strong as the kings of crust, but bands like Bacchus and Alpinist are bleeding new life into the genre.
WHERE SHOULD I START?
Start at the beginning with either of Amebix's first two albums. Dystopia's Human = Garbage EP is a must, and His Hero Is Gone's The Plot Sickens is one of the better examples of the modern crust sound.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Crust will keep bleeding into all forms of extreme metal, giving crustcore purists even more to complain about.
