Noise rock veterans Today Is the Day wasted no time in turning the inside of the Sonar into a churning mass of misery. The emotional tone that the band projects managed to at once be aggressively defiant and hopelessly grim, lifting the audience and bringing them crashing back down, raising hopes only to dash them again. While drummer Curran Reynolds kept up an arrhythmic, punishing assault like a breaking heart, Steve Austin howled and writhed, a snake with a shattered spine. "Temple of the Morning Star" was imbued with a particularly grim ache, and the crowd threw their fists in the air and screamed to relieve some of the pain.
