While many music festivals in Canada and across the world are postponing to 2021 or cancelling outright, the Toronto-based Tkaronto Music Festival is pushing forward with this year's event, but in a digital format. The inaugural edition of the Indigenous music festival will be livestreamed from May 15 to 17.
"It's essential during the COVID-19 quarantine we keep our spirits up," said spokesperson Ian Maracle in a statement about the decision to move the festival online. "With many artists being hit hard, we thought moving the event online instead of pushing it back to a 2021 was the best way to show our support for Indigenous communities and storytellers."
Performers at this year's event — which was initially planned as an outdoor music festival — include Digging Roots, William Prince, Leela Gilday, The Launch winner Logan Staats, and former A Tribe Called Red members DJ NDN and DJ Shub. It will be hosted by actress Cheri Maracle, artist Sarain Fox and comedian Ryan McMahon.
The festival will be livestreamed on Facebook, YouTube and the fest's own website beginning at 6 p.m. ET on May 15. For more information, go to TKMF.ca.
