Tired Cossack Releases Debut Full-Length 'Hocus Pocus,' Shares New Video

'Hocus Pocus' follows a string of EPs from the Winnipeg post-punk artist

Today sees Winnipeg's Tired Cossack release his debut full-length Hocus Pocus, and alongside the record, he's also shared a video for album track "Drink from the Don."

Hocus Pocus expands on the rambling post-punk of early singles "Pea Roll Along" and "Machina," its angular melodies and sly lyrics coloured by a subtle mysticism.

In a statement about the album, Tired Cossack's Stephen Levko said:

Hocus Pocus is mainly inspired by the connection I had with my Baba. The name comes from my mother's description of my Baba's beliefs — she was sincerely superstitious and had supernatural explanations for everyday occurrences.

When making the album, my mind was always drawn to that mysterious and folkloric connection between the spiritual world and my own. I wanted to convey what I had a hard time explaining with words: a mysterious and superstitious world, chaotic in its swirling vibrancy, where things are at one visible and hidden, and ultimately altogether welcoming and warm if you're willing to accept it.

The Jonathan Lee-Wing-directed video for album highlight "Drink from the Don" finds Halas haunting a low-key Halloween party before things erupt in a wild dance break.
