The Trews have been taking their stripped-down tour across Ontario, and they show no signs of slowing down — in fact, they're ramping it up with even more shows. The group's newly expanded tour announcement arrives alongside the new single and video for "Permission" from their forthcoming record Wanderer.
Last week, the Nova Scotia-based band performed the national anthem at the Ottawa Senators' home opener vs. the Toronto Maple Leafs, and will continue the streak with a string of new performances early next year. Their new dates include stops in Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Vancouver and more. See the full tour itinerary below.
As for "Permission" — recorded at the Tracking Room Studio in Nashville, TN — the single is one of three songs off the upcoming album produced by the Black Crowes' Rich Robinson. Beyond producing, Robinson accompanies the Trews' guitarist, John-Angus MacDonald, on the track.
"'Permission' started out as a high octane guitar riff in need of a home," MacDonald said in a statement. "It also features Rich, one of my all-time fav guitar players, playing the lead breaks on slide guitar."
MacDonald elaborated on taking inspiration from a certain social media star for the anthemic single:
Cut live off the floor, it really captures the energy of the band. I borrowed the opening line of the chorus, "shoot me into the sun," from Instagrammer extraordinaire the Fat Jewish and the balance of the lyrics, "I will not bite my tongue, we'll leave no song unsung, I don't care who's listening," are about fearless artistic freedom — kind of a mission statement for the band!
In addition to the track's lyrics, the "Permission" video seems to draw its influence from the photo-sharing platform as well. Light leaks, a grain effect and high-contrast tones surround the band's performance throughout the video, recalling the Instagram edits of old. Clips of high-speed highway drives and paint-splattered faces compliment the frenetic song.
Stay tuned for the release of Wanderer on November 19 through Known Accomplice, and in the meantime, check out the video for "Permission" below.
