The Ronnie James Dio Hologram Is Going on Tour

BY Calum SlingerlandPublished Jul 26, 2017

After appearing onstage at the Wacken Open Air festival in Germany last year, the Ronnie James Dio hologram made its first North American appearance earlier in 2017. Now, the digital version of the revered metalhead is set to head around the world on tour.

The "Dio Returns" tour will start with nine dates in Europe this November, with further stops to be added in South America, Australia and Asia. A North American run is expected to take place in spring of 2018.

The production uses archival live recordings of Dio in tandem with a backing band behind him. The hologram's setlist will be different each night, while stage design will be reminiscent of the man's Sacred Heart and Dream Evil tours. The group is aiming to play 80 to 100 shows with the hologram.

"Ronnie was always wanting to experiment with new stage ideas and was a big Disney fan," his widow Wendy Dio told Rolling Stone. "With this said, I am sure he is giving us his blessing with this hologram project. It gives the fans that saw Ronnie perform an opportunity to see him again and new fans that never got to see him a chance to see him for the first time. We hope everyone will enjoy the show that we have all worked so hard to put together."
