The Smile have cancelled their European tour after guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Jonny Greenwood became "seriously ill" and spent time in the ICU.

A statement from the band reads, "A few days ago, Jonny became seriously ill from an infection that needed emergency hospital treatment, some of it in intensive care. Mercifully he is now out of danger and will soon return home."

The message continues, "We have been instructed by the medical team in charge of Jonny's care to cancel all engagements until he has had time to make a full recovery. To that end, the Smile tour of Europe in August is cancelled."

The tour wasn't due to begin for more than a month, in Latvia on August 13. All told, the Smile have cancelled eight shows.

The Smile released their album Wall of Eyes earlier this year. More recently, Greenwood released a statement after controversially performing in Israel.
